Reminding some of you that know the rules and outlining them to our newer rowers:-
On Tue/Thu - small boats and slower boats
- STAY TO THE LEFT side of the course at all times. This is especially important when leaving Devonian Harbour (‘the wall’) as there tends to be a dog leg lending itself to rowers coming out into the middle of the waterway at one of the narrowest spots - just as shells are coming into the same space. Keep the moored/docked boats on to your left side about (correction) 56 feet (17 metres) - comparable to about the length of an 8+’s length. In order to be able to react to boats entering the course, you need some space. With only one coach on the water trying to keep everyone safe - we need you to really pay attention to this rule.
-When passing a slower boat - check your course and pass on the right of the slower crew (the middle of the course). Slow boats are to make sure they give way. Faster boats are to slow down a bit to make sure everyone knows what you are doing, but if it is a SatM crew - we should all know the drill. The LTR does what they can to keep their crews in the middle of the course and the Novice (on Thursday’s) tend to be slower but on the left. Please be careful of everyone when passing.
-When coming into the dock area - TAKE DOWN YOUR SPEED (please). Be very aware that others may be getting a drink, coming off the dock, or what-have-you.
-When heading out to the far end of our course (the limit is the western edge of the transient dock), you must have another rowing shell (or coach boat) within 500 metres of you (ie: don’t go all the way out there if everyone is turning at the bullnose.)
-Saturday mornings - race to the 1K mark that is the transition mark on the concrete walkway where stone changes to concrete and has a light post on it - (ask me what that means if you don’t know) and then PROCEED TO GO ON THE PADDLE to the NORTHERN side of the COURSE. (ie: get out of the way of the other boats coming in.) Gather on the north side of the course until all boats have passed the finish and then proceed down to the start at Devonian Harbour again. If you are using a stroke coach to advise you of the distance, still use the physical landmark to represent 1K because sometimes our start position can be off by metres. Better and safer to use permanent physical landmarks.
-When turning at the end of a run (this applies to either end) make sure you go straight across the course (squarely) - no banana or point turns.
