Seat Racing – Process and Procedure.
Meeting time is 7am followed by a review of this process and procedure. There will be very limited time for Q and A.
Please be aware of the following:
>Races are 3x750m (water permitting) but may be reduced to 500m at the umpire’s discretion.
>A rate cap of 22spm is assigned and will be monitored by the umpires.
>You will have 5 strokes to establish a stroke rate of 22.
>Crews found to be racing above 22spm for longer than 5 strokes will immediately be disqualified from racing.
>Times between races will be minimal (approx 6min).
>Coaching staff will not be coaching rowers rather they will be acting in an umpire capacity similar to what you will encounter at upcoming races.
>Umpires will provide safety, starting procedures and finish line commands.
>Starting and racing procedures will loosely follow RCA/ROWBC standards. Please see “start commands” below.
>All rowers should remain quiet while warming up and/or waiting for the start of their trial.
>As with all rowing races an athlete will have the opportunity to raise their arm post race to signal that they believe their race had been negatively impacted (equipment breakage, avoiding collision, collision, or capsizing). Umpires will make a decision based on the situation and may decide to re-run the race.
Start commands:
>crews will be brought up to the start line and aligned by the umpire
>bow persons will be asked if they have a course
>once alignment is established the umpire will call the start
>the call will be “ready, ready” a pause, “set” a pause, then “go”.
>15 second rule will be utilized in case equipment failure.
Additional information:
Results:
Results will not be immediately available following seat racing but will be calculated ASAP and results will be posted on the bulletin board.
Times will be taken during each race. The rower with the lowest total overall time will be declared the victor. Rowers will then be seeded by descending order into the 8+.
If a tie comes about, coaches will then use subjective criteria to finish crew selection(s). Criteria as follows: Technical ability, coach-ability, commitment, and attitude.
Addressing the additional factors of Masters rowing in order to maintain fairness:
A point system will be utilized to take into account the following factors:
-Age
-Weight
-Rowing on opposite side
*Each awarded point represents 1 second and will be subtracted off the rower’s total seat racing time.
Eg. Rower A is 35yrs old, heavyweight and rows starboard
Rower B is 35yrs old, lightweight and rows starboard
If competing against each other and rower A wins, rower B will save 1 second off his/her total time due to being lightweight.
